The 2011 Unconference Wrap Up:
The Lantern Mental Health 2.0 Conference was held in Albert Park, on Friday February 25th, 2011 . It was a great day attended by over 100 people who came along to discuss the role of technology in our mental health and the implications for service delivery. Given this was the first unconference many had attended, we were delighted when the hands shot up so quickly as we set the agenda for the morning. So many willing speakers and such enthusiasm…it blew us away. We had hoped it would be like this, but to actually see all our hopes and expectations fulfilled was amazing! A big thank-you to everyone who attended who made it that way!

The Grid:
This was the first unconference for many and yet they were not daunted and stepped up with great enthusiasm. This caused a bit of an issue for us all…we could not attend all three sessions at once! Here is a copy of the Grid or agenda for the day
Thanks to our participants, it was your day and we could not have done it without you! Thanks to our sponsors Yammer, ConNetica, Mind, McArthur and Hub Melbourne. Thanks to Steve, Eddie and Ross – we couldn’t have done it without your support. To Lynda and the Lantern team – fab! What the unconference was about:
Technology is changing the way we communicate with each other.
- In 18 months, 50% of all website views will come from mobile devices
- 1 in 6 minutes spent online are currently spent on social media sites. This trend is set to continue. [1]
- The internet has grown some 270 times since 2005. Most of this growth, is atributable to the increased use of social media by large percentages of the internet-using population.[2]
Rapid developments are occurring in the broad field of electronic health, including e-mental health. Governments, consumers, health care providers and others are working on a range of projects and activities to harness the new technologies to improve the range and quality of health services and information available to the Australian public. What is happening already and what are the future possibilities? What are the concerns? What about privacy? What is the impact of 24/7 connectedness? What about mindfulness and our well being? So much to explore!
What is an unconference?
An unconference is a facilitated, participant-driven conference centered on a theme or purpose. The term “unconference” has been applied, or self-applied, to a wide range of gatherings that try to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference, such as high costs and pre-determined programs. Attendees are expected to come along with participation in mind, willing to discuss and explore the issues and share their knowledge. The goal is to cover subjects that will be appealing across different disciplines, within the context of the topic being discussed – in our case: Mental Illness and technology.
